Shirley Commuter Stop

The Shirley, Mass stop on the commuter rail to Boston usually has a parking lot filled. Let's hope it continues to have zero empty spaces. It's an indication of our health.

What follows is a thoughtful set of images and lyrics for those who sometimes feel weary of the drudgery of commuting.

Please enjoy and reflect often with these thoughts. You can connect to the piece on YouTube as well.

Get Ready to Vote In Shirley Tuesday

Two contests on the municipal election ballot in Shirley, MA Tuesday, May 12th.  The chair of the Hazen Memorial Library Trustees, Judy Stanislaw is stepping down after a couple of decades of service to the town of Shirley. Susan M. Johnston wants to serve another three years as trustee but Dwight W. Smith challenges her for a first term.

In the other contest newcomer Kendra Dumont stepped down as chairperson of the Shirley Republican Town Committee to take on Leonardo “Chip” Guercio, who has served 16 years on the board.  That’s four years longer than Dumont has lived in Shirley.

Guercio seemed completely unconcerned when BOS chairman Enrico Cappucci was questioned about his support for the GOP’s Dumont.  Cappucci stood up for Dumont and his support for the new comer.enrico cappucci

Dumont is a 47-year old business owner, co-owner of Snipets Hair Salon in Groton.  EMC News offers this photo in place of the one we failed to obtain of Dumont.

Guercio responded to the tiny dust up saying his campaign manager was absent.  The owner of the Bull Run Restaurant was quiet in response to Cappucci’s on the record endorsement of Dumont.

In conversations on ECM News the sentiment has been it’s time for change.  Bill commented Guercio, in his opinion, has served too long.  Bill said he attended the candidates debate last week before ECM News launched.

Bill wrote “Mr. Guercio has led us down the road we are now on with absolutely no vision for the future.”

The 55-year old Guercio is a life long resident of Shirley.

Others discussing the Tuesday vote at topix.net all live outside Shirley.

The election is Tuesday and the polls will be open from 7 AM EDT to 8 PM EDT.

Join the debate and cast your ballot.

Library Meeting Reveals End of Silence

May have been a quiet and orderly meeting in the town center with a quorum for Hazen Memorial Library trustees meeting in the Shirley facility.

The Friends of the Hazen Memorial Library, however, issued an SOS for volunteers on election day.trustees The Friends warn the library faces loss of state certification if the town cuts its budget any deeper.

About 40-hours of service was trimmed off the schedule for two months in the last quarter of 2008 according to library director Debra Roy.

So The Friends are calling for volunteers to staff tables on election day and pass out literature to maintain library certification.

The last day to call and volunteer is Thursday, May 7 by noon.  Call Leslie Cady, The Friends VP, at 978-425-2315 or email her at lescady@ix.netcom.com

There’s a briefing for volunteers on Saturday afternoon.

Here are some dates to note:

May 7th deadline to volunteer to help Friends of library election day.

May 9th, 1:15 PM EDT at the library volunteer briefing

May 9th Mother Daughter Tea 12 PM EDT

May 12th Election Day

Shirley Meeting Less than an Hour

For a newbie it was interesting to observe such a boring meeting. The most banal excitement was resisted when a bit of a tussle about the upcoming election presented itself.

It’s late. This is just an update. More details to come.
