Two Community Events at Devens Saturday

A youth fishing derby and honoring the Armed Forces mark events for the Devens Community this weekend.

The Youth Fishing Derby starts at 9A EDT Saturday, May 16, 2009 and concludes at noon just as Armed Forces Day at Fort Devens celebrations kick off.

Registration for the fishing derby starts at 8:30A EDT Mirror Lake.

  • Take Exit 37 off MA Route 2
  • Merge onto Jackson Road
  • Turn right at Patton Road
  • Turn right at Lake Road
  • Arrive Mirror Lake

Fifteen years and under qualify to fish in the derby.  There will be three groups competing.

Armed Forces Day is usually celebrated on the third Saturday in May in the United States but the military is honored world wide.  And at Fort Devens it’s going to be something special.

Make sure you have photo identification and backpacks and coolers must be left behind.

Expect food, military displays, community and family.  The Devens Military web site is extremely secure and will force you to go through “warnings about trust” to get to it so just click your way past the warnings to get inside and learn more.

Gov Community Forums Toolkit

The Massachusetts Governor’s office has some open spots on its calendar for community forums mentioned in today’s posts.   The state even has a web page call “Community Forums Toolkit.”

Governor Deval Patrick has an appeal to citizens to get involved with government.

Governor’s Community Forums

Until the end of May, Massachusetts’ Governor Deval Patrick, Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray and state officials are talking with citizens in 36 locations about the government’s economic choices.  The schedule of community forums has some open dates before the end of the month.

There are two meetings in ECM country this evening at 6:30P EDT:

  • 60 North Bow St, Milford, MA at the Milford Senior Center Conference Room, moderated by Secretary Reville
  • Newton, MA Location To Be Announced (at this late hour)

The town hall style meeting conversations are supposed to give citizens a chance to ask questions and make suggestions.  Here’s Gov. Patrick, last Monday evening, in Braintree, Massachusetts.

 

Patrick is aggressively pushing his proposed reforms before next month’s legislative session.

The debate over the Massachusetts' budget is heating up and cutbacks in aid to towns in East Central Massachusetts seem almost certain.

Ashley O'Neill is a staffer for US Senator John Kerry and the Tyngsboro Selectman's comments being featured this week on ECM.

O'Neill advises a long term view of cuts in aid to towns.

Republican Dumont New Shirley, MA Selectman

Kendra L. Dumont bested Leonardo “Chip” Guercio by 73 votes to win the only contest on the municipal election ballot.  The official results come from the Town of Shirley.

Just over eleven hundred voters cast ballots in the election.  The turnout was slightly more than 28-percent. 

The United States Census Bureau projects the numbers of residents in this lowland by the Catacoonamaug River as more than seven-thousand.

There are over three-thousand registered voters in the town of Shirley.

Despite the numbers there was campaigning in the days running up to the election and at the polling place.  Below is a brief slide show of citizens at work.

Election Day in ECM Country

Three towns conduct municipal elections today.

  • Shirley

    The polls opened at 7AM EDT this morning and doors close at 8PM EDT this evening. 

    The Massachusetts Secretary of State has a utility to assist in finding your polling place.

    One contest for Board of Selectman between Leonardo “Chip” Guercio and Kendra L. Dumont.  It’s a simple ballot.

    Day of Learning for Kerry Staffer

    A single member of United States Senator John Kerry’s staff traveled more than six hours to three East Central Massachusetts’ towns listening to the plight of citizens.

    Ashley O’Neill, also Selectman in Tyngsboro, went from Groton to Pepperell to Townsend to listen to people tell their stories. She said unemployment and the economy were chief issues raised.
